The proof is out!
In an experiment conducted at Northwestern University in Chicago, researchers found that by consistently doing a 30-minute facial exercise program for 20 weeks, participants lowered their average estimated age by roughly three years.
The study was administered on a group of 27 women aged between 40 and 65 years old. They learned 32 different exercises and conducted each for about a minute for the duration of the experiment. Read here for more details about the study.
But how does Face Yoga exactly work?
The human face is the only part of the body where the muscles are attached directly to the skin instead of the bones. By exercising the facial muscles, you can quickly affect the skin’s tone and, ultimately, the shape of your face.
Look closely at your face on the mirror. Your constant expressions and how you react to your emotions become permanently etched on your face. Naturally, worriers tend to have prominent frown lines.

The facial exercises concentrate on individual muscles in key areas: the neck, mouth, cheeks, eyes and forehead. They isolate, work and tone the muscles repeatedly.
Face yoga helps in keeping the facial muscles strong and fit, and allows the connective tissue around them to stay supple and relaxed by increasing the supply of oxygen and nutrients. A mobile face always looks younger.
Moreover, it stimulates cell growth in the elastic fibers within the collagen, which shrink with age. Healthy, toned and supple skin will discourage the formation of lines when the strong underlying muscles work and relax back.
Face yoga also brightens the eyes, reduces wrinkles and generally tightens the skin in the eye area, making your eyes look younger and less tired.
